gowithYamo

Making art exhibitions accessible worldwide.

Contextual goal

gowithYamo connects art lovers with the best nearby exhibitions in all major cities. I led the design of app 2.0 across iOS and Android—this is the story behind my process.

The key challenge was that finding temporary exhibitions on the move can be difficult. Many cities have a great art scene, and a core objective of the app redesign was to ensure people didn’t miss out on new exhibitions in their area. Within 4 weeks, I worked collaboratively with the team and client to gain a deeper understanding of the objectives, conducted user surveys to produce data, and led ideation workshops to turn our insight into a lean product strategy.

Product thinking

In an iterative design phase, I worked with Product teams to create a hypothesis and moved through a test and refine process to validate our thinking.

Using wireframing, I explored ideas for an exciting way to search exhibitions by mapping out a new task flow. This covered an engaging experience to onboard, discover and search by location. To validate our ideas, we conducted prototype testing with users, which provided us with valuable user feedback to measure against our hypothesis.

Turning art
discovery into
a rewarding experience.

  • The app required many features such as checking into exhibitions, collecting coins and a reward system which allowed users to redeem items via an in-app store. Working closely with the client, Product team and Engineers, we found ways to build a newly designed experience that worked well functionally, and met the product intentions for what we set out to achieve.
  • As part of the visual overhaul, the design task involved taking apart gowithYamo’s existing app at the time, to fully understand what was not working and why the company struggled to get the results they needed. To improve this, I partnered with the client’s brand team to strike a balance between communication and an enhanced product experience that was unique to gowithYamo.
  • The intention of the redesign was focused on a simple and fun interface, packed with strong micro-interactions to elevate the user experience. One major learning from this project was that we spent time thinking about the problem rather than jumping into design too quickly, which resulted in a well informed solution that exceeded expectations.

Outcomes & impact

Since partnering with gowithYamo, the app design 2.0 drove 120k+ app downloads for the startup.

Post-launch, we continued to deliver incremental releases for their iOS and Android app. My redesign of the onboarding, discover feed and reward store helped the the startup reach 600k+ active users within 8 months. My work also drive an additional 120k+ app installs since redesign launch. In collaboration with the team, I successfully lead the product to an outcome where we were able to increase conversions for the business and improve their overall app experience.

On reflection of the process, I was always critical about our decisions and wanted to inspire the team to do the same whether in scoping or delivery phase. It was important to me that we asked questions to create strong product steer, and placed value in delivering an effective solution that drove results. I continued to partner with the client overtime to develop their long term strategy as they looked to evolve their business and capture the interest of art enthusiasts worldwide.
